Too dry Seeds require water in order to develop. Alfalfa seeds absorb about half their weight in water prior to they germinate, which makes the appearance of swollen. If your seeds are dry, they will not germinate. Incorporate more water into the plate until the seeds are damp but not floating on the surface. You can also try soaking the seeds over night; but ensure that you drain and rinse them with clean water before spreading them onto the towel.
Too moist Seeds that are moist could cause their roots and their shoots to turn brown before they develop. The seeds can also become mouldy. It’s OK for the paper towel to be wet however the seeds should not be floating in water. Remove any excess water from the tray each time you mist or water the seeds.
Too cold or hot: The best temperature for alfalfa’s growth is 20-25degC. If you are growing your seeds during winter, keep them in a cool location indoors. If you’re cultivating your seeds in extremely hot temperatures you may need to water them more often as they will dry out quicker.
