Across the 6th century BC, the Greeks established commerce colonies along the Black Sea coast of present-day Abkhazia, particularly at Pitiunt and Dioscurias. Between the ninth and sixth centuries BC, the territory of trendy Abkhazia was part of the historic Georgian kingdom of Colchis. Abkhazia covers an area of about 8,665 km2 (3,346 sq mi) at the western end of Georgia.
