The chance to become a multimillionaire is up for grabs as a whopping $60million will be offered in the Powerball on Thursday night.

This week’s Powerball draw offers the biggest jackpot of any Australian lottery game so far this year.

The jackpot surged to $60million after there were no division one winners over the past four games.

If just one person snared division one in this Thursday’s draw, The Lott spokesperson Matt Hart said they would be this post year’s biggest lottery winner to date.

‘Australia’s biggest lottery winners of 2023 so far are a woman from Echuca in Victoria and a man from Swan Valley – they both won $40 million each in separate Powerball draws earlier this year,’ he said.

‘We’ve had a steady procession of Powerball division one winners so far this year, which means we haven’t seen the Powerball jackpot climb very high…until now.

‘Any division one winners in this week’s Powerball draw would be paid their prize on 30 June – surely one way to end the financial year on a high!’

Mr Hart revealed most of the division one winners this year had actually selected their own numbers.

‘Interestingly, five of the eight Powerball division one winning entries of 2023 to date have been marked entries – where people have selected the numbers on their ticket,’ he said.

‘This is the complete opposite of previous years when QuickPicks – where the lottery terminal randomly generates the numbers on the ticket – have scored the most division one wins.’

For those looking at choosing their own numbers, The Lott has found that 17, 7, 9, 2 and 28 were the most frequently drawn from the main barrel and 3 and 19 were the most frequently drawn Powerball numbers.

Up to one in six Australians are expected to have an entry in this week’s draw.

There have been eight division one winning entries that have taken home more than $154 million in prize money this year.

Three of these wins have come from New South Wales, two in South Australia and one each in Queensland, Victoria and Western Australia.

Mr Hart recommended punters ensure they get their ticket before the draw closes.

‘My best advice for anyone wanting the chance to win Powerball this week is to ensure you have an entry in your hands before the draw’s close at 7.30pm AEST on Thursday night,’ he said.

Tricks to help you win the Lotto

Use system bets

A system bet allows punters to choose even more numbers than the standard amount in multiple combinations.

This increases chances of a win dramatically but will cost punters a little more as more games are being purchased.

System bets are popular with lotto syndicates who split the cost between players.

Be consistent

To win the lottery a player has to defy the odds stacked against them, meaning the numbers they choose don’t really matter.

According to the laws of probability, all numbers have the same chance of being drawn – however there are ways of reducing the seemingly impossible odds.

Lottoland states this probability drops the more draws that are played.

If a punter plays every week the overall lottery odds won’t change but the chances of the player beating them does.

Pick the most suitable lottery for you

It is a good idea to choose the jackpot that best suits a punter’s desired outcomes.

Some players will try their hand at winning more money at higher odds while others will go for lower jackpots with a greater chance of success.

Lottoland suggests joining a lottery syndicate to even out the costs and playing in other prize divisions which often pay out with ‘juicy’ amounts.

Two thirds of the people who hit the jackpot in 2021 bought their tickets from a licensed lottery outlet and 10 were QuickPick winners.

Avoid system numbers

An example of using system numbers could be choosing numbers that form a particular pattern on the ticket, from straight lines to complex patterns.

Lottoland says this way of picking numbers will not increase chances of winning as the results of the draw will always be random.

Consider your lucky numbers

Lottoland analysis has revealed the favoured of all 49 numbers chosen by hopeful punters was 33, while the least common was unlucky number 13.

While there is no way of scientifically proving that numbers are ‘lucky’ and ‘unlucky’ it can be useful to know what numbers are most frequently drawn.

For those looking at choosing their own numbers, The Lott has found that 17, 7, 9, 2 and 28 were the most frequently drawn from the main barrel and 3 and 19 were the most frequently drawn Powerball numbers.
